Crews of Bristol Freighters
PREPARATIONS FOR TRANSFER
(New Zealand Press Association) ■ AUCKLAND, March 29.
Squadron Leader R. A. Manners, M.B.E., will command the New Zealand Bristol Freighter flight in Malaya. He is at present commander of No. 41 Squadron, Whenuapai, from which the flight of four planes will be drawn.
Two of the planes will leave for Changi, their Malayan base, on May 14 and two on May 17.
Wing Commander A. P. Gainsford, D.S.O., D.F.C., A.F.C., commander of the Transport Wing of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, said today that the following airmen would be included in the flight:—
Pilots: Flying Officers R. I. F. Garrett, G. G. Bayliss, M. C. Preece, and R. J. Chippendale.
Navigators: Flying Officers H. J. Coventry, A. A. Henderson, B. A. N. Greer, I. J. Webster, and P. Morete. Signallers: Sergeants J. M.J. Flesher, A. J. Willis, J. Mahon, G. Bostwick, and M. A. Oldfield.
Flight engineers: Sergeants J. A Wells and R. J. A. Hooker.
Squadron Leader Manners went to Canada in 1941, and after gaining his wings went to Britain to fly with a Spitfire squadron. He gained his commission at the end of 1943. He is 35.
An advance party of 29 men left Whenuapai in a No. 40 Squadron Hastings transport for Singapore today. It included the equipment officer and engineering officer for the Bristol flight.
The Hastings will fly on to the Middle East to begin the airlift of No. 14 (Fighter) Squadron. The fighter squadron, also transferred to Malaya, will be based at Tengah.
Another Hastings will leave Whenuapai on April 4 to take part in the lift.
Part of No. 5 (Maritime) Squadron, based at Lauthala Bay, Suva, will fly to Malaya for exercises in the middle of the year. These men will not be based permanently in Malaya.
