An aircraft has reportedly gone down in into the sea in Tasman Bay, and an RNZAF Poseidon was on site, plus the rescue helicopters from Wellington and Nelson are on site.

A good day all round for the RNZAF P-8 fleet. NZ4803 completed a 9 hour patrol in the Southern Ocean today, then NZ4801 tonight this rescue.

A good day all round for the RNZAF P-8 fleet. NZ4803 completed a 9 hour patrol in the Southern Ocean today, then tonight this rescue. Not trying to be unkind about the word choice but I think chrisr's wording could be misleading, even though he does refer to the P-8 fleet. Initially I thought NZ4803 was involved in both reported events. This is how a perpetual error evolves. I think I would be right, when looking at the Flight Radar 24 trace, that the P-8 involved in the rescue was NZ4801.

Yep. It looks like NZ4801 was on a mission to Christchurch and got the call after doing one circuit there. They came down quite low over the ditching site. A rescue chopper also came out from Nelson, but I don't think they had a winch. Maybe they dropped some floaty gear to the pilot. The Westpac chopper from Wellington did the actual pickup. They did have a quick stop off on D'Urville Island on the way back for some reason. After the rescue was done, the Poseidon did some manoeuvres at very low level over the water out to sea West of Himatangi Beach. Must be cool to biff a big aircraft around at 500 feet off the water! Good training. Good outcome from all services involved.

Yes I was watching that Wellington helicopter and thought it landed there on D'Urville Island. When it took off it was in no real hurry and meandered a bit.

A very good outcome all things considered, ditching in the sea is not something I would ever wish to do.
