Just purchased the 1/48 Hasegawa Typhoon 1b (teardrop - $35.00 off Trademe ;D) and trying to decide which 486 Sqn bird. My fave book is Desmond Scott's "Typhoon Pilot" for which I've read it (counts fingers) about that many times.
Does anyone have pics or information on Des's Tiffie cause I'm out of leads.

Also you might want to look in the library for the book 'The Wild Winds' by Paul Sortehaug, which is an incredibly detailed history of 486 Squadron. I'm sure there will be photos of Des Scott's Typhoon in there (I don't have a copy so am going by memory here).

The library at Levin is rather...lacking...in the necessary depth for a modeller. It has plenty of good books though so I might have a gander. Will try find the book thanks, also thanks for the website.

If they don't have the book, ask thm to interloan it, which is a service where they can get the book sent up from the National Library for you to borrow. It may cost a couple of dollars depending on the library's policy.
The full title is 'The wild winds : the history of Number 486 RNZAF Fighter Squadron with the RAF.' ISBN 1-877139-09-2

I have read in these threads and other magazines regarding pilots flying Typhoons and Tempests during WW2, and presumably NZ sqn's, is there any reason none have not been restored here. Are there none around air worthy or able to be made to static display.

There is only one complete Typhoon in the world, in the RAF Museum, Hendon. There is a project restoring bits of one combined with mostly replica parts that began as a cockpit project but now has a tail, etc, also in the UK. Other than these, it'd be a case of finding a crash site and digging up the bits I guess. As for Tempests, there are a few more around in the UK and USA. Most I believe served in India and are the Mk II version with Centaurus engine (like the Sea Fury). There are also a few Mk V Napier Sabre engined ones around. Kermit Weeks in Florida has one of each, and his Sabre engined one is an ex No. 486 Squadron RNZAF aircraft. His Mk II is supposed to be being restored to fly, and there's another in the UK that's very near flying and may fly this UK-summer I hear. A NZ Wings magazine back in the 1980's reported a NZ pilot called Doug Dallison had bought some Tempests and one was to be restored here, but I guess that never happened. Neither type has ever visited NZ shores. See more on the link posted by Joe www.hawkertempest.se/

When I was doing my training at Gulf Aeronautics I was flicking through the reference photos taken during the restorataion of Sea Fury ZK-SFR. In amongst the bundle were a number of pics of aircraft that looked like Sea Furies but with Tubular forward fuses. These were Dougal Dallisons ex Indian Tempest II's. the photos were taken in the UK as they were on - sold before getting here. One is the one now close to flying in the UK. The pictures showed at least two airframes, in pretty good condition - a bit better than SFR was when it came in from Iraq. Although substantially different to the fury in internal structure, there were serious plans at one stage for Gulf to restore them in NZ, based on the Fury know- how.

Hi guys, sorry I cannot offer a photo of the Hendon aircraft .. I may have one in my albums !! but here is some shots of a fuselage that was at RAF Fairford during the RIAT2004. I am a team leader on the flight lines 'working' for the RAFBE and managed to take a stroll on the airside ...Spitfires were parked next to this .. sorry not sure of its destination after this ...will be back at Fairford in July for this years show, so will ask about if there is no magazine articles already detailing her rebuild lately !!?

That's the one Glen, it began as a cockpit project and then grew apparently. It does a few airshow appearances so you may see it again.

Though it isnt a RNZAF Typhoon, this is a profile that I completed recently of a 247 squadron Typhoon, and reckon this is as good a place as any to post it. actual size is quite a bit bigger than here. (400x160mm) jb

Calum, Probably old news but THE dog to put with this model is 'Kim' [kennel name 'Napier Sabre'] the wire haired fox terrier presented to him by Turton and Platts. Pictures including coloured drawing in Osprey Aircraft of the Aces 27 - Typhoon and Tempest Aces of World War 2.

Just found a Aeromaster sheet on www.squadron.com with both Scott's Typhoon and Sheddens Tempest. Not bad for $20.00 + postage
