Okay help me out here guys
I got a number of paints which are all laquers and I eventually plan to use them. But for the life of me I can't find a laquer thinner anywhere and Mitre 10 is useless.
Apart from Testors Laquer Thinner can anyone suggest where I can purchase some from. I've heard of epiglass universal thinner #4 but can't find it local?
There are the paints I got:
Alcalad II Chrome Silver Mr Models Steel Mr Colour RAF Colours (off Trademe)

I'd look in the yellow pages for an industrial paint supply place (as used by car painters etc) - In Hamilton we have Autolink or Linkup Paints. They can mix various brews of thinners to suit from bulk drums (not that I know what the mix should be!) the Epiglass stuff should be able to be obtained from such a vendor.

Including plastic models Beagle!
I just spoke to Kerry and he said if you're really stuck for finding thinners he might be able to arrange some for you. Drop him an email.

Hi, I use Lacquer whenever possible to spray my models and I use Dulon AAA Thinner. I find the AA seems to dry a bit too quick or something as the surface isnt quite as smooth as the AAA.
I just get mine from an automotive paint supply shop here.
Hope that helps
Cheers

I was building a 1:48 scale herk while on 40 Sqn. I had it at work, the body was together, the wings joined and it was sitting in the box of all the other parts ready to go on. I had a container of MEK there (wth the cap not on properly) and a bloody cat got into the hangar at night and tipped it over joining everything together. From memory this was 1988 and it only cost about $30 for the model

When last back home in NZ, I had a largish bottle of Tamiya lacquer thinner which worked brilliantly tempestwulf. Might be worth hunting some down.

I used to use MEK as a model glue. Works really well, but not the best for you!

You are all probably already aware, but MEK should be treated with extreme care. WEAR EYE PROTECTION WHENEVER USING IT. One drop can cause blindness in 20 seconds. Try an automotive paint shop for lacquer thinners, and if you don't require much take your own container.

Very true Rob, and unhaling it is also bad for you. It does not taste nice either.
They don't tell you these things when you buy little bottles of it in your hobby shop though, do they?

MEK is expensive stuff too (at least where I get it from....) I have recently brought a couple of 4 Litre containers for cleanup of the fabric stuff on my "big" aeroplane, at $70.00 or so a container - over $17.00 litre! (does anyone have a cheaper (legitimate!) source?)

I always got mine for free from Dad, who bought his at trade price somewhere, not sure where. I guess he got it cheap due to his model shop business.

I brought a 1Ltr of Epiglass Universal Thinner #4 today from Mitre 10 for $32.00. That stuff dropped me through the floor boards, it is strong. Good thing I'm moving the house around and making the spare room into a hobby room. Can keep the fumes in there.
