Welcome to the forum Duke. There are some good photos of the Hercules in that early scheme in one of Brendon Deere's 'Military Wings' books. Your local library may have the one. They're in black and white though.

The actual delivery scheme was a little different to the photo shown, although the stripes etc are the same, the roundels were the white fern type and the 40 Sqn compass rose wasnt on the fin. The Kiwi roundels came in 1970 and the compass sometim in the mid 70s. I quite like that scheme, it does look nice on a herk.

Yes, they were very smart in that scheme and won many prizes for maintenance and appearance at overseas competitions. And like all old folk, they have now turned grey

I prefer the scheme they have now - at least they no longer look like airliners.

What's wrong with the airliner look Mr Dave?

Nothing, if it's an airliner... this is a military tactical transport and shouldn't be seen as a PM's VIP aircraft in my opinion.

I actually really liked this scheme:

I liked that scheme too Craig, and I still do. But I think the new low viz grey is great. I have a 1/48th scale Hercules which one day I'll build. It will be a toss up between the two schemes.

Did the whole fleet get that three colour (Canadian?) scheme, or was it only done as a trial on a couple of aircraft?
It didn't seem to be around for very long.

All of them wore it. They were all in that colour by the time I joined in 1989, and had been for a few years I think. They remained in that scheme till the late 1990's or later.
It was apparently based on a Canadian colour scheme. I'm sure Beagle and Les will know more.

I have had a look myself but cannot find any in my photos. I should have some as I spend many hours atop the mighty herk , either painting them or removing and fitting liferafts.
