Thought I'd put up some pics of my first RNZAF pilot. It's Wng Cmdr Colin Gray when he was based in Tunisia 1943, flying a Spitfire Mk. IXc. I won't go into his history (sorry ) but give a short descript of the kit, reference sourced from the excellent Ventura book; Spitfire - The Anzacs.
Model: Italeri (ex-Occidental)
Scale: 1/48
Decals: Kit + Ventura
Extras: fuse wire brake lines, invisable thread antenna wire, internal mirror (watch that little item - was unique to his Mk. IX), replacement exhausts (airfix), replacement gun barrels (ICM).
The kit is a sound build with good measurments, I'm not a rivet counter but do agree the nose is a little deep. There's a mean seam line of the kit barrels & landing struts that need's fixing so I replaced the barrels to save effort and look.
No real problems with construction that I came across, gear bays don't meet top of wing so small gap but hey...*shrugs* I drilled the rudder and inserted gage wire so I could position it off centre, change the tail wheel position too to reflect this.
Painted with the venerable Humbrol brand enamels (I only use enamels) and no problems were found when spraying. (well okay I didn't always let them dry totally because I was an airbrush Noob ). But I did use Model Master for the Azure Blue lower fuselage. Weathering is done with pastel chalks, scrubbed into panels (brown for upper - blue for lower) which excentuated them and gave a certain amount of depth, no exhaust stains as couldn't ascertain from reference pics. Paint chipping around wingroot and certain panels which actually came out quite effective.
Decals were kit supplied for national insignia and stencils, personal markings from Ventura (excellent quality).
Well that's it, let me know what you think guys. I'll may put my 1/72 LTV A-7E on too (on different thread) that I just recycled (stripped back with Mr Muscle oven cleaner). I appreciate any comments - apologies about picture quality too, I'm practicing.
