Very nice work there, Calum.
Sorry for my ignorance, but is that the aircraft that Cobber was killed in?

Yes, I believe so. I read an account of his death recently. He was actually sitting in the 73 Squadron's Magister II, engine running, about to take off from France for Britain when he saw 'Paddy' land on the strip. He thought he'd like one last flight in his favourite aircraft, so swapped planes and took it for a blat. Sadly, it was indeed his last flight. Amazing, if that aircraft had landed after he'd taken off in the Maggie instead of before, he may well still be alive today.

Sorry for my ignorance, but is that the aircraft that Cobber was killed in? I think the one he was killed in was about 48 times larger, a bit less plastic and probably not in as good condition ......... So sorry, couldn't resist it ;D Now off to sit in the naughty chair. Great model Calum, I love the attention to detail Cheers, Stu.

I have to say Gibby that your modelling skills have advanced very rapidly to the point where I would call that model contest-winning quality.
Nice work, but I really think you need to build more jets!

Thanks Craig.
Photograghs can hide a lot of flaws. I'm still working out how to get god results withte h camera. Will be re-taking few shots of all my modells over the next week or so.
As for jets. I agree I'm over props for the moment (Although there is a spitfire about to go into the paint shop) I'm about to start a Hobby Boss Rafale (RAAF what if) and Italian F-104S (Going to try a Bare metal finish.
BTW Trev Garnet says hi.

Paddy III was a publicity thing, his biograpghy has that it was painted on the squadron hack when the press arrived.
Kain was killed flying 'V' (L1826)

Hmm, that's interesting. I think a lot of this sort of thing went on at the time in that squadron. One of Cobber's kill claims was not solely his too, it was Bill Kain, another Kiwi in the sqn who shot down the aircraft, with a little help from Cobber who may not have actually hit it. When it crashed Bill and Cobber went to see the wreck and Bill was disgusted to see body parts strewn all over and in the trees. When they arrived back at the aerodrome the press were swarming wanting to get the story, and Bill told Cobber he wanted nothing of it and that Cobber could talk to the press and claim it as his kill.
Interestingly however Cobber's official tally is apparently much lower than his actual kill total as he too neglected to claim a number of kills officially. Some say he may have had up to 40 kills. I wonder if anyone has actually tallied up the records of German losses in that sector where he was operating to see how many were not claimed.

Great work Calum, pleased to see you got her finished. Looks brilliant!
Also phas3e, Paddy III wasn't a publicity stunt (I know Burns says this but this has been successfully refuted by the research of both 73 Sqn historian Don Minterne and French historian Many Souffan). There are many inaccuracies with Burn's bio and the family were not at all happy with the book on publication, they weren't even contacted by Burns during his research!
It has been discovered that Paddy III was L1808, and Cobber flew this aircraft regularly during February/March 1940. Indeed it was in this aircraft that Cobber downed a 109E of III/JG53 on the 2nd March 1940.
Also the aircraft that Cobber was flying when killed was L1826 but this was not coded V but B.
Cheers,
Tim.

Interesting stuff, where could I find this information?

Hi phas3e,
All of this comes from a combination of the first volume of Don Minterne's History of 73 Sqn (a new edition is coming out this or next year which will include more information and new research from the old edition, I have a draft from the new edition's chapter on the Phoney War in relation to 73 which covers the period that L1808 was in service), my conversations with Don, and also an article by the aviation historian Many Souffan in the French mag Replic from a few years ago - this included a lot of new research and new information which has recently come to light.
Burns' book isn't terrible but there are a number of inaccuracies and Burns really didn't do his research entirely exhaustively. As I mentioned Cobber's family were less than happy with the end result.
HTH,
Tim.
