This is a nod and thank you to Warren Russell and his excellent books for modelers. I built this Hasegawa Corsair about five years ago as 'something different' to the variations on maritime blue ones. It is based on the photographs of the Electrical and Wireless School aircraft pictured on page 182 of his 'NZPAF and RNZAF Aircraft colour schemes volume 3' The kit is the old Hasegawa 1/72 offering with a little sawing, cutting and detailing.

Magnificent model, the detail is very well done. Like Fly Navy says, the photos are also very inspirational. Thanks for sharing them! Did the Electrical and Wiring School aircraft fly or were they just used as instructional airframes?

Great model! It's not often you ever see a silver Corsair in any country's service, and seldom you see one modelled.
Joe, I'm not sure if they flew them. If it were an instructional airframe it would not have an NZ number, and would have been substituted with an INST number as its serial. So possibly the Corsairs were flown but I'd think maybe more for ground running? I don't think that school would have had fighters as hacks, would they? Or did they have pilots who flew them to test radio systems perhaps?

Warren Russell's book notes that NZ5526 became INST118, but no date is given

November 1946.
Nice pics of the model - but I suspect in real life it was a bit more weatherbeaten.

Now then Flyernzl in the two photos I have it looks in fairly good condition although I notice that the tyres could do with a some air. Thanks for the date and compliments. copied from page 182 of Warren Russells good book.

Lovely build Kiwichappers and I'm with the others, really nice to see an all metal Corsair, makes a nice change from the blue brigade.

Great model there, although to be honest I never thought the silver ones were as 'pretty' as the blue ones! Fantastic photos of your model too; looks like you could walk out and climb aboard for a quick buzz around Christchurch in it. Warren's Corsair book is wonderful too, and I was stoked to be able to get another brand new copy from him last year as my original was getting a bit worn out. I used to spend hours just looking at the photos in that book, hoping that one day I'd get to see one in the flesh.

Slightly off topic, but maybe of interest to Craig. Planning approval finally given for the erection of the WW2 era Butler hangar at Tyabb, in readiness for (amongst other things) the Corsair presently under restoration in Darwin. The hangar was originally part of the CAC plant at Fishermans Bend. A Bellman hangar is also included in the approval, and is a future home for the Merlin powered P40 which is expected to fly early in 2008.

Rob, I read something about these hangars recently in Flightpath or Aero. I gather that if the hangars weren't rescued by Tyabb then they most likely would have been demolished?
I see the Merlin Kittyhawk had an engine run performed recently, so things are obviously progressing well with that project?

Not sure what would have happened to them if the appeal was unsuccessful. Had my project at the sandblasting works last week, and both sets of hangars were stacked there in a dismantled state. Will be a huge task to re-erect. P40 has to fly in time for the owners 60th she tells me, which means by early March 2008! Issue with the oil cooler at the moment, which may require scratch building a replacement. Not a simple or inexpensive job.

So, a working bee or two are planned to get the hangars up again? ;D
I can imagine that the Merlin Kittyhawk has been an 'interesting' project at times, especially since there ain't many of them around anymore.
