Just thought I'd share these photos from the Temora Aviation Museum of TB863 being unpacked upon arrival in Temora this morning. As can be seen from these photos, Alpine did an excellent job of packing the container and of making the crates for the wings. I think I'll have to forgo my offer of posting her back to NZ, as it looks like there's a lot more Spitfire there than I remembered! ;D

Although its sad the Spitfire has left our shores it is great that it has gone to an organization who will fly it regularly and that it is still pretty close to NZ. Must come over and see it sometime. Its a real kiwi icon thats for sure

If you get the chance, Temora is definitely well worth seeing: just make sure you book accommodation a few months before you go, because it can be difficult to find in Temora on flying weekends.
I am thinking of going for the next flying weekend on the 4th and 5th August, but will just have to see how things pan out between then and now. TB863 is due to fly on that weekend.

Yip, Temora is on my to do list, along with Reno, and Duxford so I think Temora will definately be first as they have a remarkable collection

It's nice to see that TB863 has arrived safe and sound, yet its sad all the same. It's like saying goodbye to an old friend.
I hope they'll keep the packing cases safe in case they decided to bring the Spitfire back to NZ for Wanaka airshows, etc. Maybe Grey Nurse could come too for a visit?

I'm sorry Alex, no can do.
Instead of the Spitfire, how about I send Russell Crowe back to NZ? I'll even throw Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman in as a complete package deal for free! ;D

If you threw in some cricket players, maybe!! As for the Spit, just add stamps and pop it down to your local post office!

No, I'm sorry, but it's Russell or nothing! ;D
Anyway, there's only two-thirds of Crowded House still around, and 50% of that is Australian! ;D

There were four people in Crowded House during the Woodface album period, two of them were the Finn brothers. Both Kiwis. So, outnumbered my friend.
I don't actually mind Temora keeping the Spitfire at all, so long as it remains airworthy and in good condition, as it is cheaper for me to get there to see it than it is to go to Wanaka!
I'd love it if Temora would perhaps consider allowing TB863 to visit NZ on occassions as guest for such airshows as Wanaka or Omaka - especially if they also bring it's new stablemate for the trip too. Sir Tim certainly hinted in his speech at Wanaka we may see the Spit again. With the billionaire owner it now has, easily done isn't it? And with so many of Mr Lowy's chain of malls throughout this country, his NZ profits alone could afford a trip/tour across the Tasman surely.
Craig, have the Aussies claimed you now too? Or are you claiming to be an Aussie now???

Dave, fair suck of the sav, mate; I'm still a fair dinkum Kiwi, no worries, cobber! I'm a Kiwi when I need to be, and I'm an Aussie when I need to be: it all depends who I'm trying to stir up, or who is winning in trans-Tasman sport at the time! ;D Actually, I am hoping that David might bring the Spitfire back to NZ at some stage, but I imagine that insurance and transport costs would be extremely high for such endeavours.

Could we send back the cricketer who bowled underarm? We dis-owned the two brothers at the time.
We will soon have some spare F-111s. Most of those the RAAF have sent over there have ended up either pranging or having to be rescued.

Actually, I am hoping that David might bring the Spitfire back to NZ at some stage, but I imagine that insurance and transport costs would be extremely high for such endeavours. There was a bit of talk about this at Wanaka. The wing mounts on a Spitfire are made to fit each aircraft and when the wings are removed these have to be reamed out and new bolts fitted. This may prevent the aircraft moving too far. I'm not sure if this info is correct or not, but don't let this stop anyone from posting it back to us

Only if either of the holes in the fuselage spars, front and rear, or the hole in the wing boom are scored, burred or damaged is it necessary to ream oversize by .004 inch and fit a correspondingly oversize wing bolt. Craig, I have cleared some space in the garage, but no large parcels have arrived yet!
Are they coming by boat?

I'm cutting the airframe up with tinsnips as we speak. I've worked out that if I cut the pieces up small enough, then I can save a heap on postage! ;D Not sure what I'm going to do with the Merlin though, because even if I melt it down it'll still be too heavy.

Good god, what have you done? ? I meant whole bits As for the merlin, it would make a great boat anchor I do have a good idea though, I could come over and pick it up and bring it back ;D

Don't Panic Alex!! So long as he posts the data plates I'm sure petera will deem there's enough provenance for a rebuild to airworthy ;D
