Passengers en route after emergency landing
Passengers on a board an aircraft involved in a forced landing at Melbourne Airport this morning have resumed their trip to Wollongong on a replacement plane.
The pilot of the QantasLink Dash 8 aircraft reported smoke in the cabin about 7:00am AEST and requested permission to land.
An investigation into the cause is under way.
Seventeen people were on board, including one man who was asked to help locate the source of the smoke.
"About 10 minutes into the flight, [we] noticed a bit of smoke in the cabin, the smoke alarm went off, the hostess come up and we had a look around," he said.
"She asked me to help look in the luggage compartment, we couldn't see anything there, during that time the pilot's put into place their emergency procedures."
Terry O'Connor from Air Services Australia says the drama caused disruption to other flights.
"We of course instituted for safety reasons our normal procedures and cleared them straight back to the airport, alerted the other emergency services including our fire and rescue service," he said.
"We did need to shut down the runway obviously to ensure that this aircraft was given priority, that did lead to some delays for other aircraft."
Eighty-two-year-old Jean Doyle from Ulladulla was on the plane.
"This funny noise came at the back like a bell or something and the hostess raced down the back of the plane and everybody turned around and looked," she said.
"Nobody panicked or anything but there was a funny smell like diesel, made me a little bit off in the stomach."
