How not to land a B1 Damage totaled approximately $7.9 million for the aircraft and the damage to the runway totaled approximately $14,025. The aircraft is assigned to the 9th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron of the 7th Bomb Wing at Dyess AFB, Texas. Investigators concluded the cause of the mishap was both pilots' failure to lower the landing gear during the aircraft's approach and landing. Contributing factors for the pilots' failure to lower the landing gear were the co-pilot's task oversaturation; the co-pilot's urgency to complete a long mission; both pilots' inattention to instrument readings and the descent/before landing checklist, and the co-pilot's false belief the pilot had lowered the landing gear. According to the report, the pilot unexpectedly turned over aircraft control to the co-pilot on the final approach. The pilot reported to the air traffic control tower that the landing gear was down despite the fact that the descent/before landing checklist was never completed and the landing gear was never lowered. The red warning light in the gear handle, indicating all landing gear was not down and locked, was illuminated for more than four minutes during the approach. www.sftt.org/cgi-bin/csNews/csNews.cgi?database=Unlisted.db&command=viewone&id=41

Bugger! Oh well, a bit of gravel rash can't be too bad; nothing that a quick buff and a respray wouldn't fix.

I dunno, is that skin wrinkling aft of the cockpit supposed to be there? Common feature of BUFF's, but this is a Bone.

I would imagine $7.9 million isn't just for a quick buff and spray over! If it is then I'm in the wrong business...

I can't believe the amount of dust and debris is falling away from the underside of that B-1. They sure did a good job of grinding the fuselage down.

At least they didn't crash-land one of the most expensive aircraft on their inventory.... (Unit cost US$283m)

I'm reliably informed that the B1 is termed "The Bone"; no one calls it the B1 or Lancer!
The other question relating to the co-pilot being "Over-saturated" is yank-speak. Saturated means you can take no more, so how does one become "over-saturated'?

I once had an "on the mat, hat on, no tea or biscuits" interview with my boss, an Air Commodore at the time, for something I had done, [or not done as it happens: I refused to charge two NCOs and took the rap as a result.Nothing happened!], but once the formalities were over, he told me he had once been in a simillar situation when a QFI on Vampires, and his student raised the undercarriage while taxying! He got the rocket because he should have been watching the stude more closely!
