Mum and my sister are going to be visiting Australia in March. They're going to Melbourne for a bit then flying to Sydney on Jetstar.
Mum was saying that from her research there is only one mode of public transport from Melbourne's centre to Avalon airport, and it's quite expensive. I can't quite recall but I think it was a special shuttle bus. There's apparently no train or cheap bus route. And taxi would be out of the question I'd think.
I wondered, do any of you have alternatives? Any tips welcome.

Think there is a shuttle bus per flight Dave. Check www.avalonairport.com.au and follow the links. Sometimes it is cheaper to grab a flight from Tullamarine. What you pay extra for the airline ticket may offset the cost of a 40+ minute bus trip to Avalon. There is a high speed train between Melbourne Southern Cross station and Geelong, but don't think they have got a station serving Avalon. Besides the railway line is a couple of Km from the airport at least. If you live in the western suburbs or Geelong, Avalon is OK. But far more options, facilities and convenience at Tulla. BTW. Jetstar is tipped to eventually take over Qantas domestic ops, and Qantas revert to an international carrier.
