From The Australian. www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,21823646-31477,00.html RAAF bases' $741m faceliftMark Dodd May 31, 2007. THE federal Government yesterday announced $741million in upgrades and amenity improvements to Royal Australian Air Force bases across the country. A total of $268 million in improvements at Amberley, Darwin, Pearce, Edinburgh and Townsville will allow the bases to handle the new C-17 heavy transport. Work is expected to start early next year and be completed by 2011. Defence Minister Brendan Nelson said it was necessary to upgrade the bases' runways and airport facilities so they could handle the heavy-lift transport planes. The upgrades would "significantly enhance" the Australian Defence Force's ability to provide major disaster and relief efforts, Dr Nelson said. RAAF Amberley gets $331.5million for the third stage of its redevelopment, which will include improvements to fuel storage, accommodation, medical and dental facilities, mess halls and offices. Amberley is the largest operational air base in Australia. RAAF Pearce, a training base near the West Australian town of Bullsbrook outside Perth, will get a $142 million facelift. In addition to improved aircraft maintenance facilities, a new combined mess will be built and accommodation will be upgraded.
