This book by Ross Ewing is a comprehensive history of A4s in service with the RNZAF. 152 pages of content and photographs produced on glossy b/w and colour pages it will supply great detail on the operations of this little "hotrod". The opening section descripes the interception and use of cannon fire to halt the escape of ilegal fishing vessel in NZ waters in 1976 which is a real insight on how quickly a couple of A4s can be deployed into action by the RNZAF. But alias the reader will feel a little sad at its completion or in my case really brassed off (putting it mildly)at the loss of our air arm!

I have flicked through this book int he library but I will wait a wee while to get round to reading it. Too emotional, yes. I doubt it would have been so bad for us had the F16's replaced the Skyhawks by now as planned, but we'd still miss them very much. They are a piece of Kiwiana those A4K's.

Yep, a very good read this one! Great photos and even better stories about the good times and the bad times of No. 2 and No. 75 Sqdns. Even lists all the pilots who have flown RNZAF Skyhawks 1970-2001! (I'd even recommend this to Helen Clarke, but I feel I would be wasting my time: she never listens, and quite frankly, I'd be surprised if she can she even read!) Ake ake kia kaha!

I just bought this on Trade Me and read it in 2 days. An excellent, frank and well written account and history of the RNZAF's former strike wing. Like the other reviews above, the end of the book does leave you lamenting the loss of our proud A4 squadrons. However, they will not be forgotten. Well worth purchasing, I bought it on Trade Me for 10 dollars!

The only gripe I have with "Topped gun" is I would have liked more anecdotes and stories about life on 2, 14, and 75, and living with the A-4 in general. In the same vein, I'd fully recommend "Douglas A-4 Skyhawk" by Jim Winchester. Published 2004 in the UK, with our very own NZ6204 on the cover. Comprehensive to the point of being definitive.

Hi, I bought this book at the Ohakea Museum for $50.00 after boring my daughter with a complete walkaround of their TA4K.
Both the smells of the aircraft and the book bring back memories of my time on 75 as an Armourer (77 to 79)
I recommend it to anyone that worked on A4's.
May Helen rot for this shortsighted POLITICAL DECISION!
