Does anyone here happen to have a copy of the BBC documentary series "Test Pilot", which screened here in 1987. It featured RNZAF pilot Flt Lt Steve Moore among the course of pilots who uinderwent the rigorous training at the Empire Air Training School at Boscombe Down.
I'd love to see this again if anyone has it on video please. Either a copy or a loan would be most appreciated.
I remember the BBC made some similar series around that time - one was 'Fighter Pilot", and another I think was "Paratrooper". Those were the days of good documentary television.

Yeah, I remember that. I think the actual purpose of him doing the course was that we needed a test pilot , as the selection for the Strikemaster replacement was coming up. That was his first task straight after the course from memory. It must have been pretty strenuous on the the old brain going from aircraft to aircraft and trying to remember the systems of each one. At the end they had to do a project on a certain aircraft. They wer eteamed up into pairs and at the last minute his other pairing was changed as it was with an american and the anti nuclear thing was still pretty fresh in peoples minds. He did his project on the Tornado and from memory it was found to have many shortcomings.

It certainly must have been tiring for him... I can recall the final episode where they showed him sleeping through the speeches at the end-of-course dining in. Maybe one of the pre-dinner sherries was off!

I am trying to think how long the course was for, not sure if it was 6 months or a full year. Wonder how much his fine was for that at the dining in.

The two courses that the "Test Pilot" series followed (Fixed Wing Cse No. 44 & Rotary Wing Cse No. 23) started in the first week of February 1985 and finished on 5 December 1985.

One of the main things Steve Moore did after returning to NZ after the course was take the Kahu Skyhawk through it's test programme.
I rememebr seeing him walk past the window at Wigram once and thinking 'Wow, there goes a TV star!'

And that first post-Kahu test flight was June 8th, 1988 at Woodbourne in T-bird NZ6264.
