I am seeking help regarding The Kaikoura UFO encounters of 20th/21st December and 30th/31st December 1978. I have a copy of "The Kaikoura UFO's" by Captain Bill Startup and Neil Illingworth. A very deeply thought provoking book. Does anyone know if Captain Startup is still alive? Were the TV videos shot on the second flight ever published for private purchase? If so where may I purchase a copy please? Have any other books on this subject been published. It is IMHO one of the few UFO incidents that really makes sense. Any help or pointers much appreciated. Be lucky David

The journalist Fogarty wrote a book about his experiences on the flight and the media circus afterwards called "Lets hope they're friendly". It's more of a memoir than a blow by blow account, it makes an interesting read alongside Illingworth's book.
A couple of years ago some of the principals in the case were re-interviewed for a TV2 series about New Zealand mysteries, Startup included, although he had apparently suffered a stroke and his wife did most of the talking.
