Whilst in the Warehouse the other day I noticed a book that was a compilation of selected Commando Comics, which featured stories revolving around Australian and NZ stories.
Iw as in a hurry but flicked through and noted that the first story was set in the New Zealand Wars of the 1860's. I never knew they ever did any stories outside of WWII - all the ones i collected as a kid were WWII stories.
I was wondering, did/does anyone here collect these comics, and were any ever based around RNZAF stories?

That compilation is part of a Commando 'Best of' series. I too collected these comics as a kid, and remember reading a few that were set in WW1. The Maori Wars must be a rare one though! Commando is still running (surprising seeing as they must have had to edit much of the enemy nicknames and slang out for PC purposes and the fact that all the weekly war comics have gone now). Modern Commando comics even cover space and Middle East war stories.

I had loads of them too, along with "Battle" when I was a kid. Obviously "Air Ace" was pretty popular too. Don't know whether they did any RNZAF stuff but there were a few RAF ones with Kiwi pilots, I remember one from the Battle of Britain and one from the Pacific.
Actually saw that same compilation when I was home at the start of the year and nearly bought it. Wish I had!

I collected Battle too Smithy, I still have 250 of them stored away! I collect the Charley's War books, lots of memories reading that story as a kid! There are now four of them released, and eventualy the entire story will be published. It's the greatest war comic ever made in my opinion. Smithy, for some nostalgia you might be interested in this site: charleyswar.tripod.com/Also this one, all the Johnny Red stories are in th eprocess of being put online: www.falconsquadron.sevenpennynightmare.co.uk/intro.htm
