Which Kiwis, who were or are famous for things other than specifically aviation, are also pilots?
I can think of:
Paul Homles (TV Presenter/Actor) Jim Hickey (former Weather man/TV presenter)
And I think Sir Edmund Hillary was also a pilot, wasn't he?
Anyone else?

Tom Schnakenberg (think thats how its spelt) has a Lancair 360 Homebuilt which he regularly flies, Annie Whittle (Tv Presenter from a few years back) has a Cessna 320 twin. I know there are also some Politicians and sports stars as well , but I cant remember their names now .... duh. I beleive Sir Edmund Hilary was a Naviagtor on Catalinas - I dont think he was a pilot though. Radio Personality Garyson Ottoway is a pilot (keen SAA member as well) as is Mike Pero of the Mortgage Brokers. long time radio announcer Bill Mudgeway also got his PPL. Motor Racing drivers Chris Amon and the late Roger Freeth were PPLs.

Who was that 1ZB eye-in-the-sky reporter in the early 1990s? He was quite old I recall and did some TV advert with his plane for some pain reliever or something. But previous to the 1ZB days he'd been a well known radio actor (and TV too I think). Was that Merv Smith? Or am I mixing him up with Bill Mudgeway whom you've mentioned?
Regarding Ed Hillary I had some vague memory of seeing film of him flying in the Himalaya mountains in the 1950's/60's, but thinking about it, it may not have been him actually flying. I can't recall what the plane was either.

That would be Bill Mudgeway, Dave, he did most of his flying with a certain Bryan Cox who is a good mate of yours....

Cheers for clearing that up. I don't know why I thought it was Merv Smith.

Oh BTW, there is a strong link between Sir Ed and flying other than his Catalina days, unfortunately not particularly pleasant. He lost his wife and daughter in a terrible air crash in Nepal in the 1970s, His best mate Peter Mulgrew was killed in the Erebus Crash (he was the guide on the flight - filling in for Sir Ed) however afterwards he found a lot of support from Peters Widow, June, whom he later married.

Peter Blake did a PPL at North Shore AC. John Banks did a lot of flying at Whangarei, he was a fan of the Airtourer DAC. I'm told he has recently done a helicopter rating. Going way back - Matthew Oram, a 'speaker of the house' in the 1930s, owned Avian AAF, and later a Spartan Arrow. and, of course, Mike Erceg . . .
As well as a PPL, Chris Amon has owned several aircraft, the latest being a Twin Comanche up until 2000. Bruce . . .regarding Annie Whittle, are you thinking of the 310 that crashed at Queenstown back in '97?

Oh right, him. Sorry.
I recall back in the 1990's there was a garlic magnate killed in a crash near Pirongia too. I don't think he was flying though.
