I see in the Nov 05 Wings magazine that Pioneer's DC3 ZK-AMS is for sale.
The cost? $550,000
I hope it stays in NZ.

Whatever happened to the DC-3s that sat at Harewood for what seemed like an eternity in the late1970s-early1980s? I remember sitting outside my sister's flat in Christchurch watching one fly overhead on a test flight when the news of John Lennon's death came through over the radio. Not that I cared; who the hell was John Lennon?!

The Harewood DC-3s were the last of the RNZAF machines retired in 1977. they were due to leave for africa but got held up (aparently with good reason) due to trade embargoes with Rhodesia which was going through upheaval at the time. eventually the 5 aircraft left for South Africa, (approx 1980?) where they entered service with the SAAF. Some were converted to turbine power and most still survive, now in civilian service, some still airworthy.

Watching a DC-3 fly overhead and only hearing what sounds like a Friendship must be a strange experience.....

Yes I saw that. I feel that it probably won't stay in NZ despite the best efforts of the Ashburton Aviation Museum people.

yeah, $500K is quite a bit of dosh for a small town to come up with for an aircraft unfortunately.
As long as it remains flying though, if it does go overseas !!!

Sorry to resurrect an oldish thread, but I actually used to jump out of at least two of those DC3's in RSA...

ZK-AMS came here through Oz, ex A65-9 of the RAAF so no RNZAF/NAC history. It was eventually sold back into Australia in March 2006 as VH-CWS with Classic Wings Pty. Ltd., Midland, WA

So AMS has gone. Does anyone know what is happening to AMY and is it still used by Pionair? I got this shot of it at Wigram with the control tower in the back ground. Sort of retro like, looking back in history and maybe I should have made it b&w. Still a grand old lady and the control tower sort of sets the period as many years past. www.airliners.net/open.file/1133164/L/We were lucky enough to go on our big OE last year and the tour took us to a hotel at Liverpool Airport that used to be a control tower. Quite a novelty and nostalgic indeed. I asked to go up the tower and they said no it was sealed off for safety reasons. www.airliners.net/open.file/0966669/L/The Rapide out the front is a replica. Sorry if I digressed a bit off subject. Colin

Colin, I love that picture of the DC-3 and Wigram's Tower: what a fantastic image.
A little off topic - but does anyone know if the tower at Wigram is still fully equipped, or did the RNZAF gut it when they left?
