Hiya,
With all of the Air Crash Investigations on TV at the moment, lead me to wonder, and maybe someone here may know.
AFAIK no NAC/Air NZ Boeing 737s have ever crashed, what near misses, incidents or emergencies have they ever had?
The only one I know of was when one (an old -200) had to land with no flaps here in Wellington a few years back. They really had to haul on the brakes and reverse thrusters to stop, but were able to thank goodness.

Believe me there have been numerous emergencies with the 737 fleet over the years, the majority of which have thankfully escaped the notice of the press. Usually the skill of the crews have prevented what could have been disasters. I have been involved in debriefing of crews after a number of these incidents. A few of note were the engine failures which led to the grounding of the fleet after the hush kits were fitted - especially the failure on takeoff from Queenstown, a major engine explosion/failure on take off from PMR which was heard by most of the population of the city, a bird strike on a freighter takeoff from Auckland which shattered the screens and left the cockpit and crew covered in glass, blood and feathers, and a couple of examples of crew incapacitation.

Actually yes I do vaguely remember the engine explosion incident.
I loved riding the old turbojet ones. Lots of noise and vibration !!! It was sad to see them go.

the 737 s have also had numerous "Airmiss" incidents with light aircraft and a few years ago one deposited a nice pile of JT8D engine parts on the apron at Rotorua. Incidentally the old JT8D was actually a Turbofan rather than a Turbojet, but was an early generation unit with a low bybass ratio, hence the decent noise... er sound.

I remember them before the hush-kits as well. Lotsa noise. Mind you hearing the RNZAF 727 taking off always rumbled the windows of the house (I live close to the airport). Great stuff and sadly missed.

I was privileged to spend some time riding the flightdeck of the final 737-200 sector operated by Air New Zealand in December 2001 and to take part in the farewell ceremonies. They were wonderful aircraft and served the company longer than the DC3.
ZK-NQC of course still flies on in this country with Airwork, and at various times is chartered by Air NZ to operate passenger services.
