Did anyone see 3 News last night? They have been covering the World Gliding Champs currently being held at Omarama, South Island, over the past few days.
Last night's report was on how they have had helicopters up with the gliders covering the event with live camera feeds, so that all the crews, families and other spectators could watch it all on the big screen. Before this it had been impossiblt for people on the ground to keep up with what was happening, but now Gliding as a sport is coming into the 20th Century and getting live coverage. The report stated this was the first time in the world this was done anywhere.
They said the experiment was a huge success and organisers now plan to go to big US sport networks and sell the rights to the sport, so future gliding events can become a live television event. That can only be good for the sport. More money, exposure and fans.
There was another report on the chmaps tonight. I like 3 News for their excellent coverage of avaition events. Other news networks usually ignore most avaition unless it's a crash.

Fantastic event; racing head to head unlike normal Gliding competitions. Great news NZ Ben Flewett 1st place.
Two fantastic NZ gliding videos to see are "Champions of the wave" and "Lucy learns to fly"

It was indeed great to see the Kiwi win. And the racing did look tight. I've never paid a lot of attention to gliding before despite my Dad being mad keen on them and r/c models of them. But if it becomes a televised sport I might start to watch with interest.
