There was an interesting report on TV3 news tonight about the runway upgrade and extensions at Mangere.
Auckland International Airport's main runway has been replaced over a 7 year period, where 400 workers from 14 companies worked one month per year, in the dead of night to lift sections of old runway and relay new thicker concrete. It has also been widened in order to take the larger aircraft types now coming online such as the Airbus A380.
All the work has been filmed too, so they have a great archive of the upgrade, and the report showed some cool sped up footage of the new concrete being laid in one section.
They say the upgrades to that runway are now finished and the next project if they plan to build a new international terminal also big enough to take the A380, which cannot fit into most of the current docking bays.
There was no mention of the second runway project but I believe this is still ongoing, because I heard a number of months ago on National Radio that a load of graves in a cemetery were exhumed and shifted to make way for the new runway.

2nd Runway at Mangere....I believe I got it wrong about the start of the second runway...sure the graves have been moved etc however what I thought was the start was in fact early preparation...with surveys etc...howver it may be 2 or 3 years before work commences
