A 15.30 minute piece on the Erebus disaster was on National Radio this afternoon. If you missed it, you can listen to it from a link on this page www.radionz.co.nz/nr/programmes/afternoonsLots of archive clips from original 1979 broadcasts are heard in the piece. Fascinating. Also a live (today) interview with pilot Jim Collins' widow.

Thanks for posting that link, Dave: it brings back a few memories that one.
I still remember standing in my parents backyard watching the RNZAF Orion head south from Christchurch Airport on a mission to look for the missing DC-10 late on the evening of 28th November 1979.

Yes that does bring back memories...I remember those December 1979 days well as we were well involved in transfering the deceased to Grafton Police Mortuary...What i remember well was Police officers with little exposure to deceased trying not to spend to much time amongst the 200 or so bodies that crowded the facilities in Park Ave...very sensible..it was very trying however in a strange way peaceful and historic to indentify at least all flight deck crew in their Air NZ cabin uniforms.....Hmnn...God bless them...

It's perhaps not commonly known but at the time of the disaster, the NZ Police searched the world for sound advice on Disaster Victim Identification, and could find none that fitted the situation. So it was determined they would make their own video of every procedure for future reference. Essentially, the Police treated every single victim as the subject of a murder inquiry! I was still 'in' at the time, and was invited to see the finished product and thought the detail was very thorough indeed. Not for the faint-hearted however!
