Looks like a "wet lease" - airlines do this all the time, but wouldnt know any details on this one. Nowadays they often dont even bother changing the titles on the side, as passengers board thru airbridges and often wouldnt have a clue what is written on the side of the plane!

During the Haj quite a number of aircraft are leased from other nations to be used to ferry Muslim pilgrims to Mecca: I wonder if this is one of those occasions?

I searched Paul Sheehan's very detailed book on Air New Zealand and its aircraft, but didn't come up with anything on any lease to Malaysian Airlines System - perhaps it WAS a very short term Haj lease. The only lease mentioned in the 1970s was ZK-NZS to National Airlines for seven months, April - November 1979. In case it helps, here are the DC-10s, operating dates, and who sold to, except of course, for ZK-NZP ZK-NZL 1973 - 82 (to American Airlines) ZK-NZM 1973 - 82 (to American Airlines) ZK-NZN 1974 - 81 (to International Lease Finance) ZK-NZP 1974 - 79 (crashed: Mt Erebus) ZK-NZQ 1975 - 82 (to American Airlines) ZK-NZR 1975 - 82 (to Linhas Aereas de Mocambique) ZK-NZS 1976 - 86 (Leased to LAN Chile 1982-86) ZK-NZT 1977 - 86 (Leased to LAN Chile 1982 - 86) After their leases expired, NZS was sold to Scandinavian Airways System, and NZT to American Airlines.
