Anyone know about this airline? Their DC-8-63F seems to have a New Zealand flag on it. Photo dates from around 1991.

Found two pictures on Airliners.net. Never heard of this airline before, perhaps it was on behalf of a NZ based company? It seems these two aircraft have had a long and busy life (from clicking on the construction number link).

Was it used for bloodstock/racing horse transport?

Southern World was an air freight operation based out of Auckland in approx 1991 / 92. It involved a number of fairly high profile identities, from memory TT Bland (of warbirds Fame was involved (I think). However as with a lot of startups the required capital was underestimated and the airline ceased operations after only a few months (Common story...) some of the directors formed another freight airline which leased the IL76 freighter displayed at Air Expo in 1993.

Thanks for that info - I had a vague feeling that I had come across the name some time ago.

The biography on Sir Tim Wallis 'Hurricane Tim' mentions exporting deer using a stretched DC-8 and later a Boeing 747. Could it be these SWA DC-8's that were used?

The Alpine deer exports were about 10 years earlier and I think they used Flying Tigers DC-8s. SWA mainly moved horses and general cargo taking over from the last Air NZ Cargo DC8.
