I don't recall if I have put this on the forum before. Sadly again like recent articles I've added here, it's from old microfilm, printed on a photocopier type printer and then scanned. So not good quality. I'd love a glossy print of this photo though. It comes from the cover of the NZ Observer on 31st of March 1938

Great photo - nice to see Auckland in a time before hi-rise building took off as well.
Unless I have my perspective out, if this photo was to be recreated today the Electra would be about to touch down in Whitcoulls.

What happened to 1000ft AGL over a built up area?

I guess that the bulding seen right under the Electra is the Town Hall? And is that park in the background the one where the University is?
I'd love to step back to the late 1930's or wartime era and wander around Auckland. It used to be such a beautiful city when you look at the old photos. Nowadays it's just another overcrowded, high rise ratrace with too many cars and too much pollution as far as I'm concerned.

That would be right Dave, the collection of buildings lower left is where the Aotea centre and city council building are now. great picture - and yes, the aircraft is a little low!

Here's another from Observer, this time an advert for their 1938 Christmas Annual. Electra down low among the sails. Maybe the same photo sortee I guess.
