It happens... Good idea to return I would say! xtramsn.co.nz/news/0,,11964-6661214,00.html An Air New Zealand aircraft with 12 passengers aboard was forced to turn back to Hokitika on Tuesday afternoon after smoke was smelt in the cabin.
The 19-seater J32 aircraft bound for Christchurch landed safely without incident about 4pm.
Air New Zealand spokesman Mike Tod told NZPA the smell of smoke was noticed in the passenger cabin shortly after takeoff. Emergency services were alerted and the plane returned immediately to Hokitika.
"Naturally in the interests of safety the captain decided to return the aircraft back to Hokitika for inspection," he said.
The twin-engined J32 aircraft was leased by Air New Zealand from Air National.
Engineers were inspecting the aircraft on the tarmac at Hokitika.
Mr Tod said a decision on what would happen to passengers from the flight would be made once the aircraft had been fully asasessed
