Will this kid grow up loving aviation?
Baby born in back of rescue helicopter 08 December 2006
A Waikato baby made a dramatic entry into the world when he was born in the back of a rescue helicopter.
Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust helicopter manager Greg Brownson said the baby boy from Whitianga was born in the back of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter at 8.10am today.
The helicopter had been sent to Whitianga Airfield to meet a St John Ambulance and a midwife who were looking after the mother, he said.
The decision was made when the helicopter arrived to fly the mother to the hospital to give birth, he said.
"Just as the rotors were turning for take off the baby decided to arrive.
"The helicopter began to shut down and within seconds the baby was born in the back of the helicopter."
Mr Brownson said once the mother and baby were stabilised they were flown to Waikato Hospital.
The birth was only the second to have taken place on the Auckland based helicopter.

As a paramedic ambulance officer in the 80s i never had a baby delivered in the back of a chopper however did "catch" a baby delivered in the back of a widgeon after a trip from Waiheke Isaland. These silly women often use d you as a taxi service...after alll they have 9 months on average to plan their transport unless complication arise which makes it a different issue. I have to say i miss the chopper rescue missions...landing on highways and the low level stuff...very exciting
