Does anyone know what date the first Air New Zealand Boeing 747-400 arrived in NZ?
It was while I was based at Hobsonville sometime in the summer of 1990-1991.
I recall one lunchtime i was walking back from barracks to 1TTS when the 747 flew over very, very low in a nice slow turn. It was in the newspaper about its arrival that day and that it had done a 'show off' flypast around Auckland.
I'm just curious if anyone has info on that arrival flight?

I remember lining up for a long time at mangere for the tour of the first anz 747 400. Really quite disappointing as the glass cockpit was off limits

If that is the case, then I think that aircraft must have been wet-leased out immediately. The first -400 to arrive must have come after 1990 as I recall it doing a low(ish) flypast over Ardmore whilst I was working there - between 1990 and 1993. I vaguely recall somewhere that a -400 was wet leased to Malaysian airlines early in the piece - maybe this explains the discrepancy.

Hmm, I just looked up the October 1989 Wings magazine and there's an article on the first arrival of a 747-400 into NZ, but it's a QANTAS Longreach example, VH-OJA which arrived on the 7th of October, so thats not the one I saw. The one I saw was so low it was easy to see the koru on the tail.

Once again Bruce has hit the nail on the head.
From a NZ Wings February 1990 photo caption: "Now you see it, now you don't. Air New Zealand's first Boeing 747-400 series was displayed at Auckland and Wellington last month. Standing in front of the long-legged Boeing at Christchurch are - from left - Air NZ chief executive Jim Scott, Cathay Pacific NZ and Pacific Island manager Dave Figgins and Air NZ deputy chief executive administration Jim McCrea. The new Boeing has been leased to Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific, reportedly for six months with a right of renewal for six months. See news story this issue."
The news story is a denial by Air NZ thatthe aircraft had been sold, etc.
