Gliding trials for Auckland Airport

I see that Airways New Zealand is to undergo trials next month of airliners gliding with engines at idle on approach to Auckland International Airport, rather than under power. They say it reduces the greenhouse gases and fuel consumption.

Reducing fuel consumption and emissions yes, but the greenhouse gas bit? Its all about noise and saving money. I thought they did this already domestically. I see they are contemplating allowing these glide approaches into Wellington too.

I don't think I'd like to land at Wellington without any power on, you might end up in the drink.
