Did you see on the news (TV3) last night the excellent move by the Otago Aero Club at Taieri in defending their airspace against the developers?
There was a land auction on a piece of land right next to the airport where some twit has cut the land up for housing sections. So a load of aircraft from the club got out and made a point during the auction that they flew over the land, by flying low approaches across the top of of the auctioneers and potential buyers.
They interviewed a few of the people hoping to buy land who said they didn't mind or care about the planes and the airport. They will probably change their tune of course, but at least they cannot say they were not warned.
Apparently that very piece of land which will soon have over 30 homes on it is actually necessary as an emergency run-off area and a couple of years ago two people and a horse were killed when a plane crashed in the middle of it.
It's a pity the Aero Club or the council didn't buy the land for the aerodrome.

Missed it, but have seen the ads on tv here for the sale of the sections. yes, definately too close for me. My brother lives there, well not right there but in Mosgiel , and he is looking at buying a new house but not there, well not the first part of the development. The first block of sections is right in the flight path, run off or engine out landing area.
with all the land on the Taeri plains, you would think somewhere else would have been a better drcision, then again money speaks and somebody must have got it at bargain basement price.
They should have used harvards or something a snoisey for the flyovers when the auction wa son. Anything noisier than a Harvard

"with all the land on the Taeri plains, you would think somewhere else would have been a better drcision"
Sadly in a few years time those residents will be saying the same thing to the airport, "there's plenty of land in the Taieri plains, sod off somewhere else."
I wonder whether house insurance is more expensive if you build on an airport run-off area.
