Almost certainly used for despatching movie film to cinemas around the country. A cinema in Auckland would show a movie for a week or so, and then it would be booked to show in say Gisborne, so there would be some urgency in getting the reels of film to there. No doubt there was some sort of freight priority for this type of cargo.

Ah right, yes I recall those days. Cambridge had to wait till Hamilton had finished with the reels. The TV network in NZ used to do the same thing.
