Invercargill skies rumbled to the sound of a super-sized jet yesterday as an aircraft with five American millionaire mates flew into town.
They consisted of two real estate tycoons, a hotelier, a marketing guru and a wine merchant – and they are on a golfing holiday with style.
Although not the largest plane to land in Invercargill, the Boeing 727 kept onlookers enthralled as it hit the tarmac at 3.45pm.
The plane's owner, millionaire real estate agent Geoff Palmer, said the five men, who were whisked off to Queenstown in two helicopters soon after arrival, were on a five-week golfing holiday, which started in Fiji.
Tomorrow they fly to Bali, followed by destinations including Manila, Bangkok, Cairo, New York and Los Angeles.
"We are just on holiday, a golfing holiday, we are hitting and running," he said.
When asked if they were millionaires, he said: "How else can we afford the time to travel?" He did not know the course they were playing today, saying that was being organised by someone else.
"We have got a Lord of the Rings helicopter tour then we have got golf." They would also take in the sights of Fiordland by helicopter and fly out of the country tomorrow, Mr Palmer said.
Invercargill was a "beautiful little town ... you have a great airport and everyone is really charming.
This is our first journey to the South Island and it's somewhere we will come back to" , he said from a Queenstown hotel room last night.
The region's reputation for amazing scenery had lured them south.
The five mates, from the United States, travelled around the world in the opposite direction last year, Mr Palmer said.
He declined to reveal the cost of their brief world holiday.
