ZK-CAN is the only kiwi aircraft I have seen with upper and/or lower case letters in the rego.

That will be the problem then.... clearly against the Civil aviation rules which state that rego letters must be unadorned capitals a minimum of 300mm high. That is obviously the cause of the incident! Actually, it looks less like a crash and more like a controlled forced landing onto difficult terrain, but hey, the media prefers the term "Crash" as it gets more attention.

Owner/pilot Chris Blyth is a 180/185 guru and has years and years of strip experience and tailwheel flying, especially on the 180/185 series. He normally takes a 206 to this particular strip, but obviously decided to take his love and joy CAN instead. Damage doesn't look too bad... (show me a 180 or 185 that hasn't been crashed and rebuilt or repaired!)

CAN was our old parachute jumpship many years ago with APC/Hauraki Sykdivers. Sorry to see her go down.

Three Cessnas crashed in as many days, Omaka, Uruweras and then this. Sad. Good that all survived this one though.

Again? Moons ago. Was it not CAN that arrived back at AR after O'dark o'clock with parachutists on board and made a perfect arrival into a storm water ditch?
