Hi guys
As part of my job I have to park air NZ link aircraft at their appropriate gates. the last couple of nights there has been surface water on the ramp (due to rain), and some aircraft pilots have forgotten to turn their landing gear light off (the front gear). This can make it quite hard to see the turn point or the stopping mark due to the reflection of the light.
I have asked several other staff what is the proper hand signal to tell the pilot to turn the light off, but haven't received a consistent answer. the one that sounds the best so far is to point at the aircraft and to open and close your fist (other hand).
any suggestions?

How about wearing a welding mask while you marshall - do you think they'll get the hint? there probably is a marshalling signal for that somewhere, but the aircrew have to know it as well, which in many cases they wouldnt. I marshalled aircraft at SportAvex in 2004 and i used standard signals, but as the pilots tended to be GA types, I limited myself to obvious signals as no-one would understand the unusual ones! The Catalina and Dak crews did very well though!

that is probably true i didn't think of it from that view, maybe the aircrew isn't so godly, as us mere loaders would imagine ;D. maybe just a smack on the back of the head would make them remember next time (though most of them are very good, its just the odd occasion)

Perhaps a large sign saying "turn your lights off, you bastard!" might help? ;D
Maybe this is an issue you should bring up with your OH&S officer?

Joe, I like you idea much better! ;D
You don't even need a big maglite, as those surefire(?) torches are really small, but seem to be about 1 billion candlepower! ;D

I'd go for the smack around the ears option but if you can't see stop them.

This exact thing happened to a friend of mine. He simply stood infront of them and gave no signals at all, leaving the pilots just sitting there waiting for him. It took a while but they finally got the idea when he held up his hands as if to shield out the sun.
