I saw on the News tonight that Whenuapai held an open day / airshow today. Did anyone see any advertising promo for that (other than this mornings Herald)? It looked like a great event - if anyone knew about it. Attendance was 15000 people so the news got out somewhere. Did anyone of us get up there? Any photos?

I seem to recall seeing it in the Classic Wings listings of the year's airshows but that was ages ago I saw it. A pity. I'd have liked to have gone, I haven't been to that since about 1997.
No doubt there was more publicity in Auckland, I've herad nothing here.

Television showed a formation of 5 Iroquois, the Red checkers, an Orion and a flypast of a 757 leading two Herks..... That would have been so cool!

Advertising for the event seemd to be very light even in Auckland and numbers were smaller than in previous years. I guess that could be tied in with all the anti Whenuapai feeling that is around the place at the moment. NZ Warbirds put on a 45 minute display in the morning and the RNZAF had 2 hours in the afternoon. The formations included a helicopter flyby of 6 Iroquois and 2 Seasprites, and the 757/Hercules/Orion trio. Red Checkers, Kiwi Blue and the Museum Harvard also gave displays, the Checkers adding a King Air to their final formation flypast.

as far as events went there were many displays in the air and on the ground. woah the air display were spectacular especially when the orion did a fly by, it was too close to the ground for my liking (as there were all the kids there to consider) but it was wonderful all the same!!!!!

Yes, 30 Squadron was there and there was quite a few Flights of Aircraft. Displays from the Units also. it was an excellent day all round and i must say that those other ATC Cadets not from 30 Squadron who wore shocking Uniforms. Work on your uniforms for next time.

Heres a few photos, I saw the advert for this airshow on the rnzaf website. The airforce display was excellent, (there were only four hueys in the flypast plus two sea sprites). The next airshow should be 31 March - 01 April 2007 please excuse the quality of the photos, my camera then was poor at best

Here is a link to an album I made up of several photographers contributions that attended the open day at Whenuapai 2005. www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?album=3325I hope this is okay to make these links? Still haven't quite worked out how I can actually show the photos here yet and that would be just individual shots anyway.

Fantastic images there, Colin; thak you for sharing them with us. Did it rain all through the day, or did it just blow through quickly? Love those Devon images!
