I want to congratulate and thank the organisational team of the SAANZ (including Bruce of this forum) for the excellent airshow at Tauranga today.
I was an excellent line up of very entertaining aircraft, and a thoroughly good day all in all. I'm glad the weather was good after it rained during the night. Perfect weather today actually, not too hot, not windy, a little cloud but blue. I did get sunburnt on my legs though, which are now sore.
The highlights were meeting other forum members Simon Gault, Chris Bromley and Ryan Southam. Sorry I wasn't able to catch up with you later Ryan, I did try to find you but you disappeared. Thanks Simon and Chris (and Bryan) for showing us over the aircraft. What an extraordinary beast it is. Such an awesome display Bryan!
Other highlights were seeing fly two planes I'd only seen in hangars before, Stan Smith's gorgeous de Havilland Dragon and the Ardmore based Hawker Hunter. The former was gentle and lovely, and especially nice to see in formation with the Dragon Rapide. The latter was simply fantastic, awesome. Oh the blue note!
Oh and that Thunder Mustang is simply fantastic! Wow!
Another highlight was bumping into an old mate from my RNZAF days who I hadn't seen in 12 years, so was able to catch up and swap emails. Hopefully he may join this forum too.
I did take some photos today but not many sadly as I spent most of the day behind a video camera. I'll try to get the photos here sometime in the coming week.

Sorry we didnt get the chance to do that piece of filming Dave, as the day progressed I got quite tied up with things. I had several things to attend to and only managed to get half of them done. The show turned out great with what looks like good attendance, a great variety of aircraft, and the show seemed to run to schedule quite well (which is rather unusual). Hope the Tiger display was OK....

No problem mate. I too got tied up and left it too late to try to find you. You're going to be at the Whitianga airshow at the end of this month aren't you? If so, maybe we can do it there?
The Tiger Moth routine was fantastic. I missed the very beginning due to a camera glitch and then when that was sorted I couldn't see where you were in the sky for a bit! But once I found you, I was very very impressed. It is really great to actually see a Tiger Moth out through its paces at a show these days. i haven't seen such for a long time. Often if one makes a show it's very sedate these days. But your routine was superb.
I was also stunned by the agility of that glider. Far out!

Great shots there Bruce.
Thanks for clarifying that Ryan, I didn't realise there were two different events there. i have looked it up and it seems the Tiger Moth Club of New Zealand event is on the 11th and 12th of March. I have added this to the forum calendar (which only registered members can see by the way, so for the guests out there who breeze by for a look, if you want to check out the calendar, feel free to sign up)
That Hercules looks great in the new scheme by the way, I hadn't seen one in the grey scheme in the flesh before. And they still sound as good as ever.. oh, those low hard and fast runs, just get me every time!
Nice shot of the Thunder Mustang too, it really looks great in the sunlight with that shiny scheme.

Smashing stuff Bruce!
I never saw the RNZAF Beech King Air there, I like the new swirly colour scheme on it. It contrasts well with the Dragon Rapide too, it's 42 Sqn predecessor by 65 years and still flying.

I like the Beech scheme too, I took plenty of detail pictures to help when I put my Rareplanes model kit together. I noticed the link with the Dominie as well - nice sort of continuity.....

Great photos chaps. I guess know one has any of Tigers Blood? 300kts kind of hard eh!! Congratulations to the organisers of last weekends SAA fly in at Tauranga. It was not only an enjoyable event but it ran smoothly and they even managed to get the weather on- side! Thanks also to Tauranga aeroclub we enjoyed the barbeques and conversation. It was a great pleasure for us to be in Tauranga and to be able to meet Tom Poberezny the President of the EAA. Tom was the special guest of the Sports Aircraft Association (SAA) and delivered a speach that put what the EAA (and the SAA) is about and into context, the dreamers will reach the stars! It was truly amazing to see the results of the workmanship and the years of effort that has gone into so many of the homebuilt aeroplanes and it must be a great inspiration to those who have projects underway to get back to the hangar or garage and working on their own creations. Congratulations from the Kiwi Thunder team here to all those who won awards they were well deserved. For us it was an opportunity to get out, do some flying and meet lots of people some of whom we had only met on-line until last weekend. If you have any photos you want to share send them to simon@kiwithunder.com and if appropriate we will add them to www.kiwithunder.com site. Cheers Simon

As I had my face planted behind a video camera for most of the day, sadly I did not get much chance to take still photos. But I did get a handful, and they all seem to be a little different from those on here already. So here goes (sorry Simon, I didn't think to photograph the Mustang, too busy filming it!) First up, this was dawn believe it or not. The place never got dark thanks to all the industrial factory and port floodlights, and when the sun finally shone through it was no good for our proposed filming of early morning silhouettes sadly. This was about 6.10am! Richard Hood's lovely Pitts Special A homebuilt Spitfire 'replica' And the mini-Fw190 it duelled the skies with This unusual bird is a Cricri, or Cricket, the smallest twin engined aircraft in NZ. It is owned and flown by a very nice chap called Neville Hay, who kindly told us all about it. It goes very well too, considering the tiny engines, and is apparently quite aerobatic - his sign said they go up to 9G !!! Motat's Flying Flea on display in the SAA/Motat display hangar

Excellent - I was hoping you'd get some pics of the Heron and Dragon, I was too busy (and tired, and sunburnt!) Note the name on the side of the Dragons Cockpit - a suitable local variant of the types name (or something about the owner - long story.....) Simon, this is the best pic I could get of Tigers Blood at speed. This is cropped from a larger frame size. Unfortunately the display reference points were a long way from the crowd, which made it hard to photograph using only a standard lens (CAA regs mean it cant be moved closer, I understand) It is also really hard to track at that speed! (The Hunter was even worse)
