While tidying through Dad's workshop I discovered behind a cabinet on the wall was this poster from the first airshow I rememebr going to in my life, at Hamilton Airport. I recall there were a few Isaacs Furies (one flown by Dad's mate Les Wolseley (sp?) who was a Hamilton car salesman and aero modeller). Also a Harvard or two or three, not sure how many. And a Rapide. Not sure what else. Note the poster says hang gliders would be seen, a rarity now! The poster is now on my wall!

It was at this show that I had my first flight - in a Bandeirante!. I recall NZ aerial mappings Beech Kansan was there as I climbed into the nose compartment, also a DC-3 topdresser (Fieldair) and a GAF Nomad. I distinctly recall the PL12 airtruck display - the wind blew a load of lime all over the crowd! Cliff Taits airtourer was also there, roped off (unlike the other aircraft) and labelled as a "round the world aircraft" - I thought then it looked an unlikely record breaker!. Not bad memory considering I was 8 at the time!

Hmmm, I was 9 years and 11 months old then, and I don't recall any of those items at my first airshow. Either totally forgotten or this poster isn't from the show I recall. I do seem to vaguely recall seeing an Airtruk display at Hamilton though sometime about then. Sadly I was nowhere near as interested in planes in those days as I was later, so maybe I did see all these things but just forgot them.
I was thinking that the photo I have of the Rapide in Monteiths colours (seen elsewhere on the forum) came from that airshow. I know Dad took it at the first airshow I went to, because I asked him to take it. I just liked it. Do you know Bruce, was the Rapide at this 1980 show? Perhaps it wasn't, and maybe my first airshow was later?

Sorry Dave, my memory of a Rapide is a bit hazy - I guess it didnt catch my eye at the time....

For the record, here's the Rapide photo mentioned I loved this colour scheme long before I discovered and loved their beer. I'd like to find more photos of it, to see what the tail was like. Anyone?

I recall the Rapide appeared at the 1981 Whenuapai show in its old red, blue and white scheme, so the beer can scheme appeared after that, before it reverted to the RNZAF scheme. I painted my scratchbuilt model rapide in as NZ528 in that scheme in 1989ish (before I started my trade training at Ardmore) so that change occurred before then. I think I saw it at Ardmore approx 1984 in the Monteiths scheme.

Cheers Bruce. So that dates my first airshow (that I rememebr) to actually be post-1981. Cool. Now I have to find that poster... It's probably in Dad's collection too - and in the meantime I'm rapt with the one I have. A real neat piece of history.
