rush hour has been mentioned a couple of times but as this airshow is on a Saturday how much of a difference does it make. I could only make it for the day I will fly up with Air NZ but it its to much of a pain I will flag it I will be going and usually leave very early to beat the traffic and sit near the gate till it opens. ;D Saturday can be quite busy at times with children doing sports and parents rushing to get them there on time. What time does your flight come in? Colin

Gavin, I wouldn't bother with a taxi at all. Given your time restrictions of the day, a oneday hire online from Hertz or whoever at Auckland Airport would be far cheaper than a two-way taxi-ride. I would book it now though!
I think I might drive up from Wellington the day before, do the show etc and drive back the day after, but that's three days!
I just did a quick quote for an Airpor Hire: Honda Logo, $69-00 for the day, including excess waiver!

Tibor, does the Transport Section not do an airport run anymore? there used to be vans going between Whenuapai and Magere all the time in my day. A free lift with them beat's that taxi fair. MT usually do two airport runs each day (one in the morning, one in the afternoon) during the week. After hours and during the weekend, your only option is a taxi (if it's a business trip, they give you a taxi chit).

However, there are only 3 ingress/egress routes (SH16 - Brigham Creek Rd, Hobsonville Rd - Brigham Creek Rd, Hobsonville Rd - Trig Rd) to Whenuapai and you could expect a lot of congestion getting to/from the Base for the airshow, possibly up to a couple of hours sitting in traffic. The suggestion of getting a day car hire is a very sensible option.

A note in the April 1987 edition of NZ wings states that visiting Air Forces brought the following to help the RNZAF celebrate its 50th Birthday:
RAAF - 14 Aircraft including - six F-18 Hornets - four Mirages - Caribous - a C-130 Hercules
RAF - a tristar and a VC-10
RCAF - a Canadier Challenger (what the heck is that??)
I wonder what we may see from foreign air forces next year, if any.

Dave, I'd be surprised if the RAAF wasn't sending something along - maybe some F/A-18s and/or an F-111 or two?

That's Bombadier Challenger Dave:
Don't the RAAF have one for VIP duties?
