Disappointing to find no Thunder Mustang at Omaka. I attended Wings over Wanaka and met some of a group of 15 Americans who had come to NZ for the show and particularly to see and hear the Thunder Mustang. One wonders whether the benefits that accrue to all the service industry businesses, restaurants, rental cars, motels etc. are being considered. OK you must make a profit for the show, so why not include a type that is just as appealing to the general public as the fighters but at a cost way more benificial to your bottom line.

Whilst it would be great to have the Thunder Mustang at Omaka, when you really boil it down, will there be a definite drop in attendance and therefore that downstream income compared to if it was? I would suggest probably not, the hard core enthusiasts dont want to miss out on the other cool stuff, and the "Fred public" doesnt care. Tough call to make, and I really appreciate Dave and Allan fronting up with the reasoning. It is important that this isnt seen as a "snub" either by the participants or the enthusiasts - its just a question of what fits with the direction that the organisers want the show to go. What it does raise is the issue of a "Super Show" where everything turns up - Hunters, Mustangs the works... Even with bottomless funding I'm not sure this would ever be feasable, and chances are, someone will still say something or someone extra should have been in it. Unfortunately airshows only have limited time and money - At Tauranga we were restricted by the time we could keep the airfield closed to other traffic (a CAA requirement). The general Public also finds some shows too long - especially if theyve brought the kids along as well. In reality, these people are the ones who pay for the shows. I'm sure that the decision not to show the TM was carefully considered, and may even be reconsidered if for example, an additional source of funding presented itself. Perhaps ask any business buddies if anyone is interested in Sponsoring part of the show? Unfortunately my spare leave and travel money for the year got used up on my trip to Ashburton, but I'm sure that if the weather holds the Omaka show will be absolutely stunning. Hope it all goes well!

I'm curious about the Ardmore show you mentioned with the 747. What year was that? ......saw the queue on the news, and I've often wondered if those who went through the fence paid to get in. If they did, the show must have made a good profit. Was that the same show? I think it was late 2003 or early 2004 (but I could be wrong). Not sure if it was the same show or not. I vaguely remember the thing with the fence and am pretty sure that no, they didn't pay to get it. There were quite a few people seriously burnt over that show, as far as I'm aware.

Just to set things straight about my comment on the Pitts, I was asked to submit a estimate to perform at Omaka, which I duly did, subsequent events (like selling the Pitts) occurred, so to be fair to CF I told them I wasn’t available. As it transpired I have the opportunity to use a couple of Pitts’s (nice huh), so I let them know that I was indeed happy to come down. This happened only last week so I am not surprised at all that they have filled the display, I’ll just have to work over Easter instead of having fun!
I would not like to be the person organizing a display, what I like and what others like would be vastly different, can’t please everyone.
Alan, I respect the charitable trust thing, but I remember one show where the trust got half of the takings, the dunny supplier got the other half and the pilots got sweet FA, that weekend cost me about $1000!
As far as not having a Pitts….well they should indeed be tarred feathered and be forced to listen to national radio (I am joking about the tarred and feathered bit).
As far as Ardmore goes I happened to be doing one of the commentaries and mentioned the entry thing, Warbirds got about $1500 from people bringing money up to the tent.
I really hope that the Wx is good and the show goes well, wish you all the best of luck.
Cheers. Richard. P.s I hope you are all putting in submissions about the proposed rules changes to Part 141 organizations?

Thanks Allan for clarifying the Ardmore show - I went to the 2003 show, but I didn't see a 747. Though I did arrive slightly late and left just when after the LA-9 made its first public appearance. I believe that was one of the last acts, but I had to leave right then to get back to Cambridge on time to go to work, damn it all. So it may have occurred before I arrived or after I left?
Good to hear Richard that the more honest members of the public did come forward with all that gate take money after your appeal. Thanks also for clarifying over the pitts situation. I had forgotten that you'd sold your machine.
And hey, I'm proud to say National Radio is the only radio I'll listen to. It's intelligent and non-commercial.
What's the story on these proposed rule changes?

Sorry just before we move on, a small point of clarification.
Allan, I have just checked my facts with the aircraft owner and yes he did agree on the funding as you correctly mentioned before.
I have baggs'd the double bed ;D as it wasn't quite the way it was communicated to me and it looks like it will be my shout when we meet.
Again, appreciate you taking the time to discuss this issue.
Cheers
Andrew

Dave The proposed rule changes mean you would only be able to use your instructor rating if you were part of a training organization. In effect many D and C Cat instructors who only do specific training (cub ratings, tailwheel, spinning etc) would have to be aligned with the new approved organization and comply with all the associated requirements. Proposed by the industry! Check out the NRPM at www.caa.govt.nz rules nrpms

Allan, you and your fellow organising team's task, is not an enviable position to be in. Good luck for the show, try no to kill poor old Andrew. And Richard, I think we best steer away from that 141 topic for now, at least in this thread!

Start another thread if you want Richard, I will be making a submission for sure. And will sign any petition going on this subject.

I agree with your comments Allan, the theme this year is 1930's Barnstormers era maybe that one reason why certain aircraft are not displaying. I love the show at Omaka always great variety of aircraft and the ground theatre is done so well and have the best food stalls. Someone mentioned CCF should have a tent where we can all get together after the show, great idea. See you all at Omaka. Rusty

Nope without a doubt, it is still aviation and the movies. It is split into different themes throughout the day and I know the barnstormers will be one of them. You name the film and the organisers will be trying to involve it in the show.
