I got a call this morning saying that an F111 was passing through Woodbourne so got out there and parked up in a friends vineyard to wait for it. It did two passes and was awesome, well I dont see them often so it would be awesome at 5000 feet. It did one fast pass then came around and did a low approcah and over shoot. What was unusual was the sight below. I havent seen any A4s in the sun for while and wonder weather they were put there for the benefit of the F111 crew. I would like to hope not as Im sure the Aussies know whats happening with the jets but it seemed a bit strange. Good to see the F111s making there way around the company for all to see.

Maybe they're sending an A4 team to Whenuapai for the Airshow!

Very very interesting Gavin. Can you zoom in a bit on the first and third A4 cockpit and see what is on the top of the instrument panel (I'm not trying to be funny). Looks to be a helmet (possibly red as for Kiwi Red back in the day). I could be imagining things but worth a zoom in.

I am pretty sure that are fabric covers over the HUD assembly

Interesting. Wouldn't it be awesome if Kiwi Red were making a surprise visit to Auckland but I very much doubt that.
Did you get any shots of the F-111?
What is that over by the tower? is that a little aircraft with a yellow tail? Just curious what it is. (not the yellow power-pull tug)

The little yellow tail looks like a Zenith CH701 Microlight to me - derned ugly little beasts.... (and from a Sport flyer too....) man, there goes the quality of this thread.....

Actually the towerin question is not the Woodbourne control tower anymore ? There is a new one on the other side of the airfield. What do they use the old one for. would be great to put onto the back of a truck and use for a viewing platform at air shows for the boys. Dave, use all our registration monies and buy it from them.

I think there was a bit of misappropriation there - Ryan and Beagle spotted the HUD covers...

Ah, wait a minute, registration money? You guys pay to hang around here? How come I've never seen the cheques?
Id that the original 1939 tower though, that old one? If so. I hope it will be preserved and not removed. It would have seen a fair bit of flying and some famous pilots pass through its airspace.
I think you may be right Bruce - it does look like one of those. That one in your photo looks odd, like the engine doesn't really fit but that tacked it on anyway.

That one in your photo looks odd, like the engine doesn't really fit but that tacked it on anyway. That's just the sheer brutal excess of horsepower twisting the airframe into a nose-up attitude.

The little grey and yellow aircraft is definitely a Zenith. Strange paint job, very German looking.

What was unusual was the sight below. I havent seen any A4s in the sun for while and wonder weather they were put there for the benefit of the F111 crew. Looks like they are getting engine runs. I bet the F-111 crew enjoyed seeing them on the tarmac though! Great photos of the F-111 and A-4's Gavin. Thanks for sharing them.

The A-4s would have been nice mock targets for the Pig Nav! ;D
