The Defence Force has confirmed two New Zealand soldiers wounded when a gun was accidentally fired in Afghanistan, have been more badly hurt than initially thought.
The men were traveling in a Humvee vehicle on Sunday night near Kabul, when a soldier standing on top of it accidentally fired his weapon, injuring himself and a soldier sitting inside the vehicle below.
One of the soldiers was wounded on his leg, while the other received injuries to his arm and side.
The Defence Force says initial reports were that they had not been badly wounded, and would be sent back to Afghanistan after surgery.
But following advice from a German hospital where the men are being treated, the Defence Force says the injuries are severe enough for the soldiers to be sent home.
The wounded pair are part of New Zealand's provincial reconstruction team. It was the 11th deployment and began about a month ago.
An investigation into the incident has begun. The Defence Force says the soldier whose gun was accidentally discharged could be fined more than $1,000 if he is found to have acted carelessly.www.radionz.co.nz/news/latest/200711021237/nz_soldiers_wounds_more_severe_than_initially_thought
