Army on the streets
15.11.2007
Armed warriors from Ngati Tumatauenga (the New Zealand Army) will take to the streets in parts of Wanganui this weekend.
However, it is not a local sequel to the Urewera affair, so residents, mainly in the Castlecliff area, need not feel threatened or alarmed by their presence.
The soldiers will be from the Wanganui-based, 5 Wellington West Coast and Taranaki Battalion Group (5WWCT) undertaking urban patrol training.
The training is being conducted as part of a wider training programme to prepare 5WWCT personnel for possible deployments to the Solomon Islands as part of the New Zealand Defence Force commitment to the Regional Assistance Mission in the Solomon Islands.
All members of 5WWCT are part time soldiers in the Territorial Force of the New Zealand Army who predominantly train in the weekends. Currently 15 members of the Battalion Group are deployed in the Solomon Islands and have taken time out from their civilian employment to undertake this military task.
The personnel form 5WWCT are recruited from the Taranaki, Wanganui and Wellington regions and hold a wide variety of civilian jobs. www.wanganuichronicle.co.nz/localnews/storydisplay.cfm?storyid=3755359&thesection=localnews&thesubsection=&thesecondsubsection=
