Several members of the New Zealand Flightsim Forums website were present at Ohakea yesterday, resplendent in our NZFF tee-shirts. We were taking a look around the avionics display when one of the RNZAF personnel saw us.
"Flightsim, eh? Have you seen our UH-1 simulator?"
"No..."
"Would you like to?"
Surely a rhetorical question!!!
I would LOVE to get one of these! I got a couple of snaps but none that really show it off:
A couple of ATC cadets have a go at "flying" the $700,000 simulator. This does not have any physical motion, but it does have fully operational controls which feel right and sound superb.
The main control panel. I was too busy watching the world around me to marvel at the gauges whilst flying! Only two of the instruments are actual UH-1H, the remainder being fully operational servo-powered mockups. They all, however, work. Every function in the cockpit, apart from the throttle, is available for your use. Circuit breakers pop out, system failures can be caused (attempting to land with a hydraulic lock is not fun, I can assure you!) and any time of day can be flown.
The, um, advanced graphics of the sim....Unfortunately the graphics included with the sim are not the greatest available, but we were informed that the defence force are investing in an upgrade to fully replicate New Zealand in the simulation.
One of my fellow NZFF members, Jarrod, has control of the $700,000 sim setup! And god he was good!!! A superb take-off, quick couple of circuits and near-perfect landing. Apologies for the lack of flash and detail in this and the other pics.
This was a load of fun and I'd love to have had longer with it. Kudos to the RNZAF gents for taking us in for a play, very much appreciated!
