Found an old black & white print of Auster ZK-AUI a few days ago. The print is mounted on a hardboard backing, and has had some sort of white sticker plastered on the centre of it. I have never seen a photo of this particular aircraft before - an Auster Autocrat, it was active in NZ from July 1949 until it collided with Land-Rover near Tekapo 29Jan59. Seems to have spent its NZ life in the the southern South Island area. For my $6.00 I now have an interesting little repair project on my hands. I have done an intial scan of the photograph before I separate it from its mount and see if any of the sticker can be peeled off, just in case. The photo as it currently exists:

It looks like quite a job to fix - it the print is nice and glossy a damp dishcloth sitting on it for a few minutes may dislodge the glue (like taking a stamp off an envelope). I just had rough go with paint Shop to see what could be done to restore it. Given more time and better skills, it possibly could be saved if the sticker won't budge

I would get it scanned at high res and then repair it in photoshop. Any attempt to remove it from the backing will only make it worse.

your on the right track - CS2 can fix the picture with no trouble..... mind you it does take a little while to master all the clone/paint/draw/healing brush/blur/sharpen etc controls - this pic would make an excellent starting project. Scan the picture with the highest settings available and use that as your 'original' if you want to see a 'before and after' project (all be it in colour) then check out the ILcasino pictures in fotopic at www.musice.co.nz - the 'photo' took 11 days to 'repaint' back to the original look...........
