Hello everyone, you may have noticed on another thread that the Waikato Thames Valley Chapter of the Sport Aircraft Association is holding the "Black Sands Fly In" at Raglan on November 4th and 5th. As part of this exciting event we will be holding a photo competition (which will also promote this forum). The theme is "Spirit of Sport Flying" and is open to any images taken during the Black Sands Fly In. Pictures can be digital or film scanned, and digital manipulation is allowable. We are currently sorting out a suitable prize for this competition, and we have yet to appoint judges. Competition will close and be judged 2 weeks after the fly in. (19th November) - stay turned - and see you at Raglan.....

Stay turned? Which way?
Good idea Bruce. Photos down on the beach during the landings would be great (if the weather's right).

To get the ball rolling, and to help people find the correct thread for the competition here we go: Unfortunately, as organiser of the competition, this photo isnt eligible....

I like the second shot with the aircraft parked on the beach. The pic of Raglan is also very good.

Great photos. I really hoped to get to the event but circumstances didn't pan out in the end. Will you do it again next year guys?
I like that aerial shot of the airport!
Is the WWII pillbox still on the beach there? It was facing the harbour channel. It always fascinated me. I'd hate to have been a Home Guard or Homeserviceman manning it on a cold dark night with a westerly blowing.

I see Noel has signed up! (welcome to the forum!) Dave, the Pillbox is still there, it now has a definite forward lean! (originally it was on the sand dunes, but erosion has deposited it on the beach. There was a bit of a debate in the local council about funding to relocate and restore it, but the funding went to the golf club in the end to buy a tractor...
We would like to hold the fly in again next year, whichever week in November has tides suitable for beach flying (which was so popular) however we have some issues to sort out. Despite the incredible attendance we actually made next to nothing for our hangar project (the main reason for doing this) as despite a good income on the registrations and raffles etc, we lost heavily on accomodation. We had budgeted on the bunkrooms being half full, but only a handful actually used them. It appears that double and twin units are what is required, however to get the HQ complex we needed to book the attached bunkrooms as well (and pay the minimum fee) We can increase the rego fees next year, but a number of aircraft went home on Saturday as all the Motels were full, so that doesnt completely resolve the issue. In order to make it worth the effort of organising an event of this nature, we will actually have to sort out the accomodation issues for the future events.

Bruce, that is a shame to hear that financially things didn't turn out as had been hoped - especially when there was such a good turn out for the event.
Is it possible have people accomodated in another nearby location, and then run a shuttle bus back and forward to ferry people between the airstrip and the motels(s)? I obviously don't know anything about Raglan and the neighbouring area, so this idea might be totally unfeasable.
Anyway, best of luck for the next one.

As we're a week away now from this year's Black Sands, I thought it'd be worthwhile bumping this thread back to the top as it has photos of the event last year.
How are the preparations coming Bruce? Will there be a large turnout? Will you hold another photo competition? If so, feel free to run it on the forum here again, it may get us some more members.
