My first air-to-air photography session (well except for one sortie in 1977.) These were taken from Martin Robson’s Piper Lance, a Piper Seneca, a pair of Piper Cubs and an Auster. We managed nine hours flight time with 9 different aircraft being photographed. These were: Cub, Lance, Nanchang, Auster, Ercoupe, Mini Mustang, Vans RV 4, Super Cub and a Corby Starlet. Over 1,100 images were taken using a Canon 20D with a 24-105mm f4 LIS lens. All were captured in the RAW file format. Shutter speeds ranged from 1/250th sec down to 1/60th. We were based at the Peninsular Aero Club’s field at Tyabb on the Mornington Peninsular in Victoria. The session started just on sunrise on Saturday 7th October and concluded in the afternoon of the next day. Auster Martin Robson in his Piper Lance machine gunning the water. 1/160th sec for almost full-circle prop blur. The Lance over Mornington Peninsular Sparking waters Piper Cub J4 just after sunrise So the sun burnt a hole in my retina? Straight out of the Piper Cub brochure The golden hour The sun glints on the silver propeller Auster makes some G Super Cub against a threatening sky RV and a ship Pinning the RV against the sky The RV in another part of the circle The RV against the turquoise water IMG]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v677/finesse7/IMG_2299.jpg[/IMG] Mini Mustang with Martin squeezed into the tiny cockpit VH-ERC Ercoupe over the sand spit Nanchang breaks hard We fired a missile at the Nanchang and missed So he fired one back! Nanchang over the mud flats of the inlet Hans’ Corby Starlet heads home The Starlet banks away Hans’ keeps an eye on the Super Cub. Hans across the water Hans’ Corby Starlet Back to base

Wonderful pics Peter, and great to finally catch up. Who will be the first eagle eyed observer to spot the spelling mistake you have photographed here? Rob

Thanks Rob,
The Poms call semi- trailers by that name. It took me a while but then you know I am slow!

Hi xr6T,
Thank you. The Cub shots were done at the optimum time of day (one of the two periods anyway).

Hi Peter, My name is Gavin and I was going to use my name as my user name but couldnt make it work.
Ive done around 6 air to airs lately but cant post any images until the magazines use them. Editors really hate it when people get to see photos before they appear in there publications so best I not break that rule8-)

Many thanks. Just revert to childhood.
It was a fantastic opportunity to fly with the team at Peninsula Aero Club. They gave me their time, aircraft hours and expertise with immense enthusiasm and utter professionalism. This allowed me to concentrate on letting the creative juices flow.
It was a case of point the camera out the window or door space and fire away. God and Canon did the rest.
The satisfaction of seeing the images come to life on Martin's laptop computer in the aero club after each flight was indescribable.
I would also like to pay homage to Paul Bowen and Mike Fizer in the USA. Their unfettled advice on camera technique and safety briefings was invaluable. Interestingly I used a much shorter focal length lens than they advised. This was possible due to the RAAF-like precision of the pilots' flying and communciation skills to maintain close but very safe formations.
The hospitality of the PAC was also very much appreciated. They have a wonderful club there and my only regret is that I live in Sydney and cannot become an active member.
PAC will have another of their fabulous airshows in March 2008.

Here are some more from Tyabb. Rans RV7 through Polaroids Martin looks content. Love the strip of sun-glint on the prop. Martin’s idea of a joke. Sea green, pea green. Up close and personal The Lance breaks free ‘Tis a wonderful thing the control Photoshop gives when using RAW image files Cub’s flight into darkness Just after “Oh, dark thirty”. Take off quietly from Tyabb. The Cub again turns into blue.

Missing the C in arctic - love the photos - love the aeroplanes (My kinda aircraft...) the Cub is absolutely Beautiful - despite the spelling - the evening light just suits it. Must get some air to airs of my machine once I get it flying. Excellent work!

Thanks Bruce. Well spotted. The Cub shots were at 0600 and the light was every bit as good as it would have been in the early evening. Something about the Cub and its yellow paint.

Hi Peter, I mainly do work for Aviation News here in NZ. I have a good thing going with them so will stick with them. Also shoot some for Classic Wings and some airchow programs. As far as books go, just Warbirds Over Wanaka and Classic fighters. Am looking to head to the UK for a month to build my file of photos before launching the website next year but work is to busy for me to get away so may flag it. I write stories as well as take the photos but prefer just doing the photos. Its just a bit of fun in my spare time due to a busy life I cant do any where near as much as I would like. I have a few interesting air to airs coming up so will post some photos.

Hi Gavin,
I must catch up those magazines. The UK also appeals but the cost and crowds kill me.
XH558's first flight since her rebuild excites. I would also like to do a taxi run in Just Jane and see a couple of Lightning hi speed taxis.
I look forward to seeing your air to airs.
I used the 20D with a 24-105 LIS. It was very comfortable and allowed me to use lower shutter speeds when required.
The pilots were highly competent and they could nail position every time. The fairly calm conditions on the first day helped but they were still great when the wind and turbulence came up on Sunday.
