I normally use a Sigma 24-70 EX lens for air to airs but have a photo shoot coming up with a pilot who has some formation experiesnce but not a lot so I am going to need a bit more reach. I will fly in a Nanchang with the rear cockpit section taken off so the lens is going to have to be shortish in order to keep out of the breeze. I can get the lens mentioned above in a couple of days and was wondering how many of you guys have one and how good is it? The 24-70 has been a great lens if pilot really knows his stuff but its not so easy if formation experience is lacking a bit and if I am out in the breeze, my 28-300 is great. The 24-105 will be used soley on air to airs. I would be interested in knowing the good, the bad, and the ugly if there is any but being an L lens means it should be quite good

I have only used this lens once before, but from that one shoot (not air-to-air) i found it to be very good. sharpness was on par with my Canon 28-70 f2.8L and in all other respects i found it to be a very good lens. Hope this is of some help.

My 70-200 would have been much too long on this sortie.
The 24-105 f4 LIS was fantastic and just the right reach.
Crystal clear and sharp as a razor. Worth every penny.
Hafl your luck to be able to use a lens just for air-to airs! This range is similar to the unbiquitous 28-70 f 2.8 L used by most wedding photograpers. The 24-70 on a 1.6 crop gives a similar range and, except for low light where the extra stop is nice for background blur, the newer lens does a fine job. It is lighter and the IS gives you at least three stops extra for hand-holding.
Another advantage of the 24-105mm is that you can shoot at a lower shutter speed for improved prop blur. I shot down to 1/60s at times and the images were very sharp.

I shot down to 1/60s at times and the images were very sharp. Hi Peter, Well I did buy the lens and have only had the chance to use it for landscape shots but it performs very well. It will be mainly used for air to airs as my 28-300 L suits most ground based stuff quite well, I am sure it will be useful for other things though. Its just not worth being caught short when youre in the air, better to sort it out on the ground. Not sure weather to sell my Sigma 24-70 EX though. In saying that if anyone is looking at a good lens in that range let me know as we could probably stike a deal
