Cool picture! The town has grown a bit since then, but all the features in the photo are still recognisable. Te Koutu lake looks quite clean and Beautiful - Since that time it has had issues with clarity and water quality due to stormwater runoff. From an RNZAF point of view, the wartime AR9 Fuel depot was hidden in the patch of trees at the extreme left, immediately above the lake. The rail yards are between those trees and the first row of buildings visible beyond that. The famous white church (St Andrews) is in the bottom RH corner and the town square where the Armistice day celebrations are now held is just above that. Best little town in NZ I reckon

Best little town in NZ I reckon No argument from me on that point No matter where I happen to be living, I always think of Cambridge as home and have many happy memories of my younger years there. To the best of my knowledge, the ancestral Russell clan has been part of the town as long as there has been a Cambridge and my mother's side of the family since the early 20th century. While I've got Photoshop up and running and to (roughly) illustrate Bruce's directions ..... .... and to the top left of that (hidden by the hotel) is the "1931" building that used to house the dental surgery of Arthur Moore who, when he had to work late some evenings, would occasionally be "assisted" by his grandson. A large amount of this assistance ended up consisting of the use of the surgery light aimed through the windows for the spotlighting of departing patrons from the aforementioned hotel Cheers, Stu.

Interesting shot Stu. Thanks. By the way Bruce, the Armistice Day will no longer be held there. The committee have, for some stupid reason, decided to move it to Rugby Park in taylor Street, out of the way and hard to find for visitors.

I can see the Pub I stayed in when I was there in 2006! ;D
(Is it the Commercial Hotel, Dave? I can't remember the name now - the pint of Waikato Draught killed too many braincells!)

I think you stayed in The National Hotel didn't you? It's shut now, some Dorklanders are turning it into a flippin shopping mall!
