Here is a mixture of old NZ aircraft photos that have been hanging on the wall for decades in my late Dad's workshop... I thought some may be of interest. Cessna 172M ZK-DUK, no idea where or when but post-1985 when it entered the NZ register, and possibly at Ardmore? It's still registered today. A Rolladen-Schneider LS 3-a glider ZK-GLP - not sure where or when. It's still registered today. Keith Trillo's Pitts Special ZK-EEU, I think this is at Max Clear's Te Kowhai airfield in 1980. In the background is Jodel ZK-JON, but I don't know what the I.D. of the yellow machine is I think this is the same event, ZK-DFN. I don't know what type it is, and can't find anything on it. It's no longer on the register. A push-pull Cessna 337 ZK-DFT at, I think, Rukuhia. On the back the print is stamped with the date 16-2-73. It seems this is now registered to Garth Hogan. Tiger Moth ZK-ANQ, taken at Gisborne in April 1984. I think the photographer was Dad's mate Bill Cooksey, who lived down there then. I note today this aircraft is owned by The Vintage Aviator Ltd. Sorry it's such a poor photo, it is badly faded. Note the crest on it, is that the ATC crest.

Interesting pics Dave. ZK DFN is a Bushby Midget Mustang. Think this is now VH DFN and currently based at Tyabb.

The crest on the Tiger Moth certainly looks like that of the ATC. It's great to see old photos of aeroplanes, thanks for bringing them out for us.

Thanks Rob. I wonder if that is the one that Phil Murray used to fly. There also used to be one locally owned by one of the Krippner boys, I think Paul Krippner, or possibly Ivan. Anyone know?
Cheers Joe. I wonder if the crest is part of a genuine RNZAF scheme from the 1950's, or if it was being used by the ATC in the 1980's.

The ATC were using a Tiger Moth in Omaka for air experience and a few were utilised as glider tugs, so you never know. It may also be recognition of the aircraft's service life?

The first two pics are likely to be at Matamata, The yellow aircraft in the third picture is a Druine Turbulent - not sure which one. ANQ was owned by Glen Thompson in the early 1990s, my Boss at Gulf Aeronautics. dont know anything about the colour scheme, location unknown. Ivan Kripner currently owns Midget Mustang DDP at Paterangi. some clues anyway...

Thanks Bruce, so it's not Ivan's Midget Mustang then. I wonder if it was Phil's one, I seem to recall the colour being the same when it used to be based at Wigram in the early 1990's with Phil.

First thought on looking at the glider photo is Waharoa Airfield, the trees and the hill line in the background just look right. Les.

Is Waharoa the same as Matamata?

yes they are the same. Officially its Matamata airfield, (its listed as such in the AIP, radio calls are made to Matamata Traffic, and its owned by the matamata district council) however it is located just north of Waharoa and is often still referred to as Waharoa.

ZK-DFN Midget Mustang was registered to P T & J R Keen, Te Kowhai, and went with P Keen to Australia in 1993. Midget Mustang ZK-DDC has been owned by I L Krippner, Te Awamutu since 1991. I agree those first couple of photos are Matamata/Wharoa, and the next two look to be Te Kowhai. ZK-DFT as at Feb73 was owned by James Aviation, that pic is located at the rear of James' main hangar at Hamilton. Ross Land of Gisborne owned ZK-ANQ in 1984, having rebuilt the aircraft in partnership with J F Smith in 1983. I recollect him having some ATC connection - anyone here in the ATC at Gisborne around that time able to comment?

The first photo the aircaft are parked beside the old Piako Aero Club hangar at Waharoa, the hangar was pulled down mid 80's.The glider is parked about half way down the main strip in front of the current glider hangars. Most weekends of my formative years were spent at the airfield there while Dad was gliding/flying there.

I have no idea about the ATC connection of ANQ , but the tiger Joe speaks of was BSN , and actually owned by 27 sqn ATC ( Blenheim ) . Its primary use was indeed as a glider tug . I was fortunate enough to have spent a few hours admiring this aircraft from the front seat of a glider ( also owned by 27 sqn ) whilst trying to hold position directly behind , ( sounds easy when your on the end of a rope - but its not ! )

That was taken in 1979 - Myles on the Wing, Stan Smith leaning around to one side prior to swinging the prop and Ian Gemmel in the front seat, having a go. I hopped in the Auster with Stan just after this and we went off and took some air to air shots, which I will get scanned one of these days (bloody Viko prints - all go red!). The weak point Myles reckoned was the magnetos on the Gypsy Minor., otherwise, 110mph cruise on 90hp and on the smell of an oily rag and quite aerobatic - lost a camera out of the rear cockpit parcel shelf doing stall turns over the Sweetwaters? festival site, in 1980 - almost took my nose with it! ah , heres one I have scanned....not very well - I must find the negatives......
